Lightweight three-camera VFX plate capture system delivers extended flight time for heavy-lift aerial production

LONDON, UK – Wonderfilm Pictures, the London-based film production and VFX technology company, has successfully deployed its 3-Way RED KOMODO-X VFX Array in its drone configuration on the set of a major upcoming international TV series, working in partnership with aerial specialists Skynamic.

The system was flown on an Alta X heavy-lift drone platform to capture wide-format VFX and background plates for the production’s virtual production and visual effects pipeline. Engineered to weigh just 9.2kg — well under the production’s required payload ceiling, and lighter than a competing array system also under consideration — Wonderfilm’s drone array gave the production’s Director of Photography significantly more available flight time per battery, without compromising on capability.

The array retains full wireless multi-camera and lens control via the Teradek Bolt 6 ecosystem, genlock and timecode synchronisation across all three RED KOMODO-X cameras, complete ND filtration, and live wireless video for on-set playback and review — all while operating within the payload limits of both the Alta X drone and the DJI Ronin 2 gimbal.

“The brief was simple: give a DOP everything they’d expect from a single camera on a drone, but across three synchronised cameras, without asking the pilot to compromise on flight time or safety margin,” said Lewis Andrews, founder of Wonderfilm Pictures. “Getting the array down to 9.2kg without cutting a single feature was the real engineering challenge, and seeing it fly through some genuinely difficult weather on this job was proof it was worth solving.”

A Wonderfilm technician was on set throughout the shoot, working directly with the production’s VFX supervisor on stitched deliverables, field-of-view calibration, and the material’s application in virtual production workflows. Wonderfilm also offers full plate-stitching services in-house, post-production.

Following the deployment, the production’s DOP has expressed interest in using the Wonderfilm array again on a future project.
