SPOKANE, WA, UNITED STATES, August 7, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Firefighters working 24-hour shifts during wildfire season face a scheduling problem most patients don’t: by the time a shift ends, most dental offices are closed, and the next one starts before many reopen. Avenue Dental Care North Spokane, led by Dr. Navdeep Virk, is addressing that gap by holding same-day emergency slots for firefighters, EMS personnel, and other first responders serving in the current wildfire response across Spokane County and eastern Washington — no insurance requirement, no out-of-pocket cost.
“Cost isn’t the only barrier for people on rotating shifts — timing is just as real a problem,” said Dr. Virk. “If someone calls us with a dental emergency and they’re due back on shift in a few hours, we want to be able to work them in that same day, not next week.”
The need reflects the scale of current demand on Spokane’s emergency services. Spokane Fire Department crews responded to 54,312 calls in 2024, about 82 percent medical, according to department figures — a workload now stretched further by wildfire response duties. The department’s roots go back to volunteer companies formed in 1884, and its firefighters’ union, IAFF Local 29, chartered in 1918, was a founding member of the International Association of Fire Fighters.
The program covers emergency issues only — pain, infection, swelling, broken or knocked-out teeth, and lost fillings or crowns — Monday through Friday. Personnel on 24-hour shifts or deployed rotations are asked to call ahead so the practice can hold a slot.
