Falls Church, VA – August 13, 2026 – MQR Cafe, the specialty coffee and all-day brunch spot in Barcroft Plaza, is marking two years in Falls Church this July. Since opening in the summer of 2024, the counter-service cafe on Columbia Pike has grown from a new arrival into a fixture of the neighborhood’s morning routine.
The cafe takes its name from Maqur, a district in Afghanistan’s Ghazni province, and that heritage runs through the menu. Its house pistachio latte, built on a syrup of raw pistachios, vanilla beans, and brown sugar, has drawn coffee drinkers from across the DMV since Arlington Magazine’s dining critic wrote about it in early 2025. Alongside it, the cardamom latte and a rotating case of pastries have given regulars plenty of reasons to keep coming back.
Where MQR stands apart is the food. Much of the all-day brunch menu is made in house and rooted in Middle Eastern and Afghan flavors. Guests come in for the kunafa French toast, rolled in shredded kataifi and finished with orange-blossom cream, the Mediterranean chopped cheese with Aleppo pepper and harissa garlic mayo, labneh toast with za’atar and honey, harissa egg sandwiches, and the MQR Breakfast, served with poached eggs and warm Afghan bread. The cinnamon rolls, baked fresh each morning, drew a visit from 7News/WJLA earlier this year. Proteins are halal, and most of the menu stays under $16.
“Two years in, the thing we hear most is that MQR feels like a neighborhood place, and that is exactly what we set out to build,” said owner Nor Powanda, who runs the cafe alongside his work as an international trade lawyer. “We are grateful to the regulars who made that happen.”
Location has been part of the draw. Tucked into Barcroft Plaza across from the Goodwill and next to the Barcroft Community Center, MQR sits within easy reach of the Columbia Pike corridor and the surrounding Falls Church neighborhoods. With free WiFi and a 45-seat room, the cafe has become a place where people settle in over a second cup, whether they are working, meeting a friend, or waiting on a fresh batch of pastries.
To mark the anniversary, the team is thanking the community that carried it through its first two years and inviting new guests to stop in and taste what the neighborhood has been talking about.
MQR Cafe is open daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at 6343 E Columbia Pike, Falls Church, VA 22041.
